Henry Shapiro, Piano

Pianist Henry Shapiro regularly appears as a soloist and chamber musician in the U.S. and Europe, and has performed at the Marlboro, Aspen, and Mendocino Music Festivals, the Teatro Ghione (Rome), and Merkin Concert Hall in NYC. He is a founding member of the West End Trio which, in 2007, released a CD of Schumann piano trios on the Town Hall label. He served as a chamber music coach for the Quartet Program at Bucknell University for many summers. 

While on a Fullbright scholarship to study at Oxford Unversity, Shapiro studied piano with Leonie Gombrich, a pupil and later teaching assistant to Theodor Leschetizky.  The legendary Leschetizky, whose lineage connected him directly back to Karl Czerny and Beethoven, was the famous piano pedagogue who taught an incredible line-up of the early to mid 20th century’s greatest pianists.

In addition to his work as a musician Shapiro has a Ph.D. in Literature from Columbia University and taught Literature, Poetry and Music in New York City at the Eugene Lang College at The New School University for more than two decades. In 2002 he received The New School University’s Distinguished University Teaching Award in recognition for his unique educative gifts. Shapiro has published fiction, poetry and non-fiction, including a study of the choreography of Balanchine.
