This concert highlights music and poetry by Black composers and poets interpreted through a historic lens, alongside a discussion about social justice and representation in classical music. Experience works of African American composers Margaret Bonds and John W. Work III as performed by tenor Davron Monroe, poet and literary performer Regie Gibson, and Convergence Ensemble’s pianist and Artistic Director Rachel Goodwin.

American Voice in Poetry and Song III

Convergence Ensemble presents American Voice in Poetry and Song III at St John’s Episcopal Church in Southwest Harbor, Maine on Friday, June 9 at 7:00 pm. This special concert highlights music and poetry by Black composers and poets interpreted through a historic lens, alongside a discussion about social justice and representation in classical music. Featured performers include tenor Davron Monroe, poet and literary performer Regie Gibson, and Convergence Ensemble’s pianist and Artistic Director Rachel Goodwin.

A reception will follow at the Wendell Gilley Museum.

Strings Galore

Convergence Ensemble's season will open with a concert at the historic St. Mary's Church featuring guitarist Aaron Larget-Caplan, violist Michelle LaCourse, violinist Heidi Braun-Hill and cellist Hyun-Ji Kwon. The ensemble will perform works for string trio and guitar, as well as guitar and string duos. Featured composers are Bach, Beethoven, John Cage, Libby Larsen, Thomas Read, Antonio Celso Ribeiro, Roland Dyens, and Aaron Larget-Caplan himself!

Earl Kim: Now and Then

On Saturday, December 5 at 8:00PM Convergence Ensemble will live-stream Earl Kim’s poignant Now and Then, described by his former student Dr. Anthony Brandt as “a quiet, passionate protest against nuclear war”, in a virtual salon event, followed by a roundtable discussion exploring history, art, and activism, featuring “radiant” (The Boston Musical Intelligencer) mezzo-soprano D’Anna Fortunato (also featured on the performance), “gutsy, risk-taking” (Patriot Ledger) artistic director Rachel Goodwin, peace activist Joseph Gerson, peacebuilder Ray Matsumiya, and poet and moderator Charles Coe. Henry Shapiro Piano Recital

For our next event we are delighted to announce that the singular Henry Shapiro will stage his own Escape from New York and make a triumphant return to Boston. Mr. Shapiro is donating a solo piano performance to support the Convergence Ensemble's work. The concert will take place in the historic Ashmont Hill home of ensemble founder and artistic director Rachel Goodwin, who shares a history of collaborative musical friendship with Mr. Shapiro.

Rachel Goodwin, founder and former Artistic Director of Ashmont Hill Chamber Music, hailed by the press “for her tradition of gutsy, risk-taking programming" has joined forces with a core group of long-time musical collaborators to create the Convergence Ensemble. Convergence Ensemble’s inaugural concert will be a gala benefit on Saturday, February 28th at 5:30 p.m. in the historic Ashmont Hill home of pianist Rachel Goodwin, followed by a reception with the performers.
